National Doctors’ Day: Honoring Our Healthcare Heroes
Next National Doctors’ Day: Sunday, March 30, 2025
National Doctors’ Day is a cherished observance held annually on March 30. This special day provides an opportunity to express our gratitude for the dedication and hard work of doctors who ensure quality healthcare for every individual in our society.
A Brief History of National Doctors’ Day
The origins of National Doctors’ Day date back to 1933, thanks to Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a physician from Winder, Georgia. Eudora felt it was important to dedicate a day to recognize the invaluable contributions of doctors to their patients’ well-being.

The first observance took place on March 30, 1933. On this day, Eudora sent greeting cards to several doctors and placed red carnations on the graves of deceased physicians who had made significant impacts in their communities.
Why March 30? This date holds historical significance as it marks the anniversary of Dr. Crawford W. Long‘s groundbreaking achievement in 1842—the first successful use of ether anesthesia during surgery. Dr. Long performed a procedure on a man with a tumor in his neck, and the patient reported feeling no pain or awareness during the operation.
In 1935, a resolution was introduced at a meeting of the Southern Medical Alliance to establish an official observance of this day. However, it wasn’t until 1990 that President George H.W. Bush signed a law officially designating March 30 as National Doctors’ Day.
