Manitoba General Holidays 2027, One by One

New Year’s Day — Friday, January 1, 2027

New Year’s Day falls on a Friday in 2027, so employees on a Monday-to-Friday schedule get a three-day weekend from January 1 to 3. It is the first of Manitoba’s nine general holidays and a statutory holiday across Canada.

Louis Riel Day — Monday, February 15, 2027

Louis Riel Day is observed on the third Monday of February, which is February 15 in 2027. Manitoba created it as its February holiday, in the same slot where several other provinces observe Family Day. It honours Louis Riel, the Métis leader who drove the creation of Manitoba as Canada’s fifth province. The long weekend runs February 13 to 15.

Good Friday — Friday, March 26, 2027

Good Friday falls two days before Easter Sunday, which is March 28, 2027. It is the only Easter-weekend day that carries general holiday pay in Manitoba. Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are not general holidays, although some employers choose to close on Easter Monday through workplace policy. The long weekend runs March 26 to 28.

Victoria Day — Monday, May 24, 2027

Victoria Day is observed on the Monday before May 25, which is May 24 in 2027. It creates a long weekend from May 22 to 24 and is widely seen as the unofficial start of the summer season.

Canada Day — Thursday, July 1, 2027

Canada Day marks the anniversary of Confederation on July 1 and is a Manitoba general holiday. In 2027 it falls on a Thursday, so there is no automatic long weekend. Employees who take Friday, July 2 as a vacation day get a four-day break from July 1 to 4.

Labour Day — Monday, September 6, 2027

Labour Day is observed on the first Monday of September, which is September 6 in 2027. The long weekend runs September 4 to 6. It marks the unofficial end of summer and the return to school routines.

Orange Shirt Day — Thursday, September 30, 2027

Orange Shirt Day, also called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, honours residential school Survivors, their families and their communities. It is a Manitoba general holiday and falls on a Thursday in 2027. According to the fact sheet, it is the only Manitoba general holiday that an employer cannot replace with another day.

Thanksgiving — Monday, October 11, 2027

Thanksgiving is observed on the second Monday of October, which is October 11 in 2027. The long weekend runs October 9 to 11. It is the last holiday Monday of the year, because Christmas Day lands on a Saturday in 2027 and does not create a weekday break.

Christmas Day — Saturday, December 25, 2027

Christmas Day falls on a Saturday in 2027. Employees who do not normally work Saturdays may receive an alternate paid day off or holiday pay, depending on their schedule and workplace agreements. Boxing Day, Sunday, December 26, is not a Manitoba general holiday.

Manitoba Long Weekends in 2027

Six Manitoba stat holidays create a standard three-day long weekend in 2027: New Year’s Day (January 1–3), Louis Riel Day (February 13–15), Good Friday (March 26–28), Victoria Day (May 22–24), Labour Day (September 4–6) and Thanksgiving (October 9–11).

Two Thursday holidays, Canada Day and Orange Shirt Day, make Friday a popular vacation day. Taking that Friday off gives four-day breaks from July 1 to 4 and from September 30 to October 3.

Is there an August long weekend in Manitoba?

No stat holiday falls in August in Manitoba. The first Monday of August, August 2, 2027, is observed as Terry Fox Day in Manitoba, but it is not a general holiday. Other provinces call that Monday the Civic Holiday. Employees are paid for Terry Fox Day only if their employer chooses to give the day off with pay.

Which Days Are Not Stat Holidays in Manitoba?

How Manitoba Stat Holiday Pay Works

Most Manitoba employees are paid general holiday pay whether or not they work on the day. The amount depends on how much they earned in the weeks before the holiday.

Stat holiday pay formula

General holiday pay is 5% of the employee’s regular wages in the 28 days, or four weeks, before the holiday. An employee who earned $2,000 in regular wages over that period receives $100 in general holiday pay. Overtime is not part of regular wages.

Working on a stat holiday

Employees who work on a general holiday are paid 1½ times their regular wage rate for all hours worked that day. They also receive their general holiday pay. Employers can replace most holidays with another day, so the exact outcome depends on the workplace.

Substituting another day

Employers may substitute another day for any general holiday except Orange Shirt Day. This arrangement does not need approval from Employment Standards, but the employer should keep a copy of the agreement.

Stat pay when employment ends

If an employee ends their employment in the four weeks before a general holiday, there is no entitlement to holiday pay for that holiday. If employment ends before an alternate day off is taken, the employer must pay the holiday pay within 10 business days. General holidays are not counted as vacation days.

Manitoba Statutory Holidays vs. Federal Holidays

Manitoba’s general holidays apply to provincially regulated workplaces. About 10 per cent of Manitoba employees fall under federal jurisdiction, such as banking, telecommunications and interprovincial transportation. For them, the Canada Labour Code applies and sets different holiday rules. Employees unsure which rules cover them should contact the Employment Standards Branch or the federal labour program before calculating pay.
