Durga Puja 2026: Dates and Which Day Is Today

To find which day of Durga Puja it is today, match today’s date to this table. Many people count five main days from Shashthi. UNESCO describes a ten-day worship that opens on Mahalaya, when the eyes of the clay images are painted, and ends on the tenth day with immersion in the river. So “Day 1” depends on which counting system your family or committee uses.
Durga Puja Schedule: Day-by-Day Rituals
Each day has its own rituals and its own name. The schedule below applies every year; only the dates change.
Mahalaya: The Start of Devi Paksha
Mahalaya falls on the new moon, five to six days before Maha Shashthi. It marks the end of the ancestral fortnight and the start of Devi Paksha. Families offer tarpan to their ancestors. Artisans paint the eyes on the idols, a ritual known as Chokkhu Daan. Many households listen to the traditional Mahalaya recitation at dawn.
Maha Shashthi: The Goddess Arrives
On Shashthi, the idols are unveiled and the evening ritual of Bodhon invokes the goddess. Pandals open to visitors, and dhaks (large drums) announce the festival. This is the day most people mean by “the start date of Durga Puja”.
Maha Saptami and Maha Ashtami
Saptami begins with the bathing of the Kola Bou, a plantain tree draped in a sari, which represents the goddess. Ashtami is the busiest day. Devotees offer pushpanjali in the morning. Kumari Puja, the worship of a young girl as the goddess, is often held on this day. Sandhi Puja follows at the junction between Ashtami and Navami, and lasts 48 minutes.
Maha Navami
Navami closes the main worship with the final aarti and bhog. In many pandals, communities share a large communal meal. Dhunuchi dance, performed with clay incense burners, fills the evening.
Vijaya Dashami: The Last Day of Durga Puja
Dashami is the last day of Durga Puja. Married women apply vermilion to the goddess and to each other in Sindur Khela. The idols are then carried in processions for immersion in a river or pond. People exchange greetings and sweets, and younger family members seek the blessings of elders. For the same day seen through Dussehra, read our guide to Vijaya Dashami dates.
Durga Puja Start Date, End Date and Duration
The start date of Durga Puja 2027 is Tuesday, 5 October. The end date is Saturday, 9 October. The core festival lasts five days: Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami.
Counted from Mahalaya, the full festival spans ten days. In 2027, Mahalaya falls at the new moon at the end of September, five days before Maha Shashthi. The final day of Durga Puja is always Vijaya Dashami, the tenth lunar day of the bright fortnight.
Durga Puja Holiday: Is It a Public Holiday?
Vijaya Dashami, which is also Dussehra, is a gazetted holiday on the Government of India list. Other Durga Puja holidays depend on the state. West Bengal and several eastern states notify extra days around Saptami, Ashtami and Navami. Schools, banks and offices may close for several days in these regions.
Because state lists change each year, check the official notification of your state, employer or school once it is published. The event list further down shows the next celebrations on the Indian calendar.
Durga Puja, Navratri and Dussehra: What Is the Difference?
Durga Puja is the Bengali and eastern Indian festival that honours the goddess Durga with idols, pandals and art. It is also spelled Durga Pooja or Durga Pujo. Navratri is the nine-night festival that runs across much of India in the same season. Dussehra is the tenth day, which celebrates the victory of good over evil.
The three festivals share the same lunar fortnight. Their rituals and local customs differ. UNESCO inscribed Durga Puja in Kolkata on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021, and describes it as a festival that blends religion, art and community participation.
Durga Puja Meaning and Traditions
Durga Puja celebrates the goddess Durga and her victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Devotees see it as the triumph of good over evil. It is also a homecoming: families travel to their hometowns, and Bengalis abroad hold their own pujas. Artisans shape the idols from clay, and communities build themed pandals that double as open-air art galleries. Visitors walk from pandal to pandal, a custom known as pandal hopping. Traditional foods such as khichuri, luchi and sweets are part of the celebration.
Plan Around Durga Puja 2027
Travel to Kolkata, Guwahati and other major pandal cities books out weeks ahead. Book trains, flights and hotels early. Plan pandal visits for weekday mornings, when crowds are smaller.
A short festive season follows. Lakshmi Puja comes on the full moon after Dashami, and Kali Puja and Diwali follow roughly a month later. See our guides to Lakshmi Puja, Kali Puja and Diwali. For year-round planning, use the 2027 India calendar with holidays.
