Colorado Day, American Family Day and Bennington Battle Day

Colorado Day on August 1 commemorates Colorado’s 1876 admission as the 38th state. Arizona recognizes American Family Day on the first Sunday of August, which is also August 1 in 2027. Both land on a Sunday, so weekday schedules do not change. Vermont observes Bennington Battle Day on Monday, August 16, remembering the 1777 Revolutionary War victory near Bennington, with events in the town.

No, August 2027 has no federal holidays. Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) lists 11 public holidays, and none falls in August. March and April also have none. According to the Office of Personnel Management, this law sets the holidays for federal employees.

How August 2027 Affects Banks, Mail and Schools

Banks stay open because they follow federal holidays, and August has none. State holidays do not close them. The U.S. Postal Service delivers mail normally throughout the month, since it observes federal holidays only. Hospitals, pharmacies and emergency services run as usual. Private employers set their own policies, and most stay open on state holidays unless state law or company rules say otherwise.

Many school districts start between early and late August, so check your district calendar for the first day. Several states also run back-to-school sales tax holidays in August, and dates vary by state. For office hours on a state holiday, use the state directory on USA.gov to reach the right agency.

Long Weekends and Days Off in August 2027

August 2027 has no nationwide long weekend. Two states get one. Rhode Island enjoys Saturday, August 7 through Monday, August 9 for Victory Day. Hawaii enjoys Friday, August 20 through Sunday, August 22 for Statehood Day. Texas state employees may also take Friday, August 27 under the partial staffing rule. Everyone else works regular schedules until Labor Day weekend, Saturday, September 4 through Monday, September 6. Federal employees who want extra time off in August need to use annual leave. Plan travel and appointments around those state dates, because hotels, flights and state service counters get busier near them.

Why Does August Have No Federal Holidays?

Federal holidays exist only when Congress writes them into law, and Congress has never designated one in August. Summer holidays cluster around Memorial Day in May, Juneteenth on June 19, Independence Day on July 4 and Labor Day in September. Searchers sometimes ask about an August bank holiday, but that term is British. US banks follow federal holidays, so none applies here.
